Baltic region faces rising GPS interference and airspace security shifts

Increased GPS interference and heightened security protocols are emerging in the Baltic Sea region and NATO’s eastern flank. Finnair has announced changes to pilot training and operational procedures due to the frequency of satellite navigation disruptions, which have become a near-daily occurrence in certain areas. While commercial aircraft utilize backup systems like inertial and radio navigation, the loss of GPS complicates flight planning and precision approaches. The airline previously had to adjust procedures for flights to Tartu, Estonia, due to these complications.

Simultaneously, Poland is updating its military engagement rules in response to growing hybrid threats. Deputy Minister Cezary Tomczykas stated that pilots or operations commanders will now be permitted to make decisions to shoot down unauthorized aircraft based on radar data or other system information, rather than requiring visual identification. This shift from peacetime standards is intended to address the increasing frequency of drone incursions and airspace violations, which Poland attributes to Russian hybrid provocations.
