Baltic Sea fishing: Quota increases spark concern and aquaculture research

Fishermen in the Pomeranian region are raising alarms over proposed European Union plans to increase fishing quotas for sprat and herring in the Baltic Sea starting next year. Industry representatives, including Grzegorz Hałubek of the Association of Polish Fishermen, argue that these increases could exacerbate the decline of cod populations. They contend that mass forage fishing for small fish removes the essential food source required for cod to regenerate.

In response to the decline of traditional fishing, scientific research is underway in the Ustka municipality to explore alternative livelihoods. Funded by the European Union, a project in the port of Rowas is monitoring water parameters to assess the feasibility of mussel and seaweed farming. Local officials and residents hope this transition to aquaculture can provide a sustainable economic future for fishing communities facing the collapse of traditional cod and herring fisheries.
