Baltic Sea tourism: From Scharbeutz beaches to satirical hiking trails

The Baltic Sea coast in Germany offers diverse experiences ranging from traditional seaside resorts to satirical hiking trails. In Scharbeutz, a popular destination in Schleswig-Holstein, visitors can navigate a ten-kilometer sandy beach, visit the largest ice rink in the region, or explore the Dunes Mile. Local customs distinguish regular visitors from newcomers, such as booking beach chairs (Strandkörbe) early in the morning or meeting at specific numbered beach sections rather than general landmarks.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, near Klein Strömkendorf at the Salzhaff, a different type of attraction exists. Known colloquially as the ‘Arschlochpfad’ (Asshole Path), the site is officially titled the ‘Lehrpfad der unholdigen Personen’ (Educational Path of Unpleasant Persons). This 1.3-kilometer satirical circular route through a quiet forest area features various statues of historical figures, offering an ironic alternative to traditional coastal sightseeing.
