The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have submitted a joint request to the European Commission for 500 million euros to establish a unified drone defense system. The initiative aims to integrate AI-driven detection and neutralization capabilities to protect the region's borders and critical infrastructure. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that the Baltic nations serve as a barrier protecting the rest of Europe, making EU investment in their security a natural necessity.

The request is driven by an increased perceived threat from Russia and recent drone-related incidents in the region. The Baltic defense ministers hope for a response from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen within weeks, with the goal of securing funds by the end of the year.

In a related development regarding drone countermeasures, a security analysis suggests that NATO could form a multinational squadron specifically tasked with intercepting attack drones. Expert Justin Bronk of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) recommended using the Czech-made L-39NG Skyfox as a cost-effective platform for this mission. The Skyfox would allow NATO to preserve expensive fighter jets and high-end missile stocks while providing a dedicated response to one-way attack drones.
