Baltic states strengthen defenses against potential Russian aggression

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are intensifying military preparations to counter a potential Russian invasion. These efforts include large-scale simulations, such as recent exercises in Lithuania involving the Lithuanian Union of Riflemen, where volunteers practiced combat scenarios, casualty evacuation, and intelligence sharing.

A key component of this regional strategy is preparing for a scenario in which United States military assistance might be delayed or limited. To delay any potential advance, Lithuania is constructing physical barriers like dragon's teeth and anti-tank ditches along its borders, while also developing advanced sensor networks and drone capabilities.

While Western intelligence agencies report no immediate signs of a large-scale conventional invasion similar to the 2022 attack on Ukraine, there are heightened warnings regarding hybrid warfare. Intelligence reports suggest that Vladimir Putin aims to fracture NATO and the EU from within, potentially testing the alliance's resolve through limited incursions or sabotage starting as early as the autumn of 2026.
