Baltic states urge EU to ban Russian grain transit

The Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have formally requested that the European Union implement an urgent ban on the transit of Russian grain through its territory. In a joint letter addressed to European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the leaders argued that the EU must not serve as a channel for Russia to mitigate the economic consequences of its military aggression.

The proposal comes as Russia seeks alternative export routes following Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian Black Sea and Azov Sea ports, which have severely disrupted traditional maritime grain shipments. The Baltic leaders expressed concern that Russia is using EU infrastructure to maintain revenue while simultaneously undermining Ukraine’s ability to export its own agricultural products.

Specific measures proposed by the region include strengthening EU-Ukraine solidarity corridors and preventing the transit of grain allegedly stolen from occupied Ukrainian territories. Additionally, Lithuania has suggested that the EU impose sanctions on Russian agricultural oligarchs who provide financial support to the war effort. Estonia has already moved forward with its own domestic transit ban on Russian grain.
