Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse spurs criminal charges and $2.25 bn settlement

On March 26 2024 a container ship, the M/V Dali, lost power and struck a support of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the span to collapse within seconds. Six construction workers were killed and others injured, and the closure of the Port of Baltimore disrupted regional commerce.

In May 2026 federal prosecutors filed an indictment against Singapore‑based Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., India‑based Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd., and the vessel’s technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair. The charges allege conspiracy, failure to report a hazardous condition, obstruction of investigators and false statements.

Separately, Maryland announced a $2.25 billion settlement with Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine, covering the state’s claims for debris removal, bridge reconstruction and economic losses. The settlement does not resolve individual wrongful‑death or personal‑injury claims, which families may still pursue.

A federal judge, James Bredar, postponed the civil trial that was to address remaining claims—primarily economic losses claimed by businesses and the City of Baltimore—after last‑minute settlements resolved most outstanding issues. Bredar said he was “highly frustrated” but will consider further settlements before setting a new trial date.
