The Kecskeméti Court has upheld the detention of former Hungarian Minister of Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó and former State Secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz. The decision follows an initial detention order issued on October 1, 2026.

The suspects are facing criminal proceedings for breach of trust causing particularly significant financial loss. Prosecutors allege that they misappropriated more than 17 billion forints from the National Cultural Fund (NKA). It is claimed that these funds were distributed through a dual system that bypassed formal procedures to cover campaign costs for the 2026 parliamentary elections and to serve personal interests.

The court justified the continued detention by citing a well-founded suspicion of crime, as well as risks regarding flight, concealment, and the potential for the suspects to unlawfully influence witnesses.

Political reactions have been polarized. The Fidesz presidency condemned the decision as an act of political intimidation and a baseless attempt to target former government officials. Conversely, KDNP faction leader Bence Rétvári has organized a prayer service to support the detainees, describing them as victims of political arbitrary power.
