Former Minister of Culture and Innovation Balázs Hankó has defended the legality of the National Cultural Fund (NKA) regarding its 17.6 billion forint funding decisions. In an interview, Hankó stated that the distribution of funds was lawful and complied with all regulations.

The funds originated from Szerencsejáték Zrt. lottery revenues, which the government released in May and June 2025 for community programs with nationwide distribution. Hankó noted that the process was transparent, with calls for applications appearing on the NKA website in August and December 2025.

Approximately 800 programs worth over 10 billion forints were supported. The remaining 7.6 billion forints were allocated to various cultural initiatives, including easy listening programs, concert series, exhibitions, and events related to the Jókai and Márai memorial years, as well as the Hungarian-Serbian cultural season. Hankó emphasized that individual requests were verified by the National Cultural Support Management for financial, professional, and legal compliance before being approved by the NKA presidency.
