Balázs Hankó ordered into pretrial detention in Hungary

The Kecskemét District Court has ordered the 30-day pretrial detention of Balázs Hankó, the former Hungarian Minister of Culture and an MP for Fidesz. The decision follows the suspension of his parliamentary immunity.

Hankó is suspected of breach of trust committed in a criminal association, allegedly involving the misappropriation of over 17 billion forints from the National Cultural Fund (NKA). Prosecutors claim the funds were distributed to Fidesz-linked artists and used for election campaigns. The court cited risks of flight and the potential for the suspect to illegally influence the proceedings as grounds for the detention.

Veronika Varga, the former state secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, has also been detained in connection with the investigation. Hankó and his legal team have appealed the court's decision.
