Balázs Orbán to replace Pál Szekeres in European Parliament

The Hungarian National Election Committee has issued a mandate to Balázs Orbán to fill the vacancy in the European Parliament left by Pál Szekeres. Szekeres resigned from his European parliamentary seat, effective September 14, 2024, to take up a seat in the Hungarian National Assembly following the resignation of János Lázár.

Balázs Orbán, who was ranked 48th on the Fidesz–KDNP joint list during the 2024 European Parliament elections, will succeed Szekeres in Brussels once the committee's decision becomes legally binding. This personnel shift marks a transition for Szekeres, a former Olympic and Paralympic medalist, who will continue his political work within the Hungarian parliament instead of the European Union body.
