Bamanga Tukur, former PDP Chairman and NPA head, dies at 90

Nigeria is mourning the death of elder statesman and former political leader Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who passed away on September 12 at the age of 90.

Tukur served as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2012 to 2014, a period marked by significant internal party shifts. He was also the General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 1975 to 1982.

Ambassador Godknows Igali, Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), described Tukur as a patriotic and detribalised statesman who worked toward national integration. Igali noted that during Tukur’s leadership at the NPA, he ensured that ports in the South-South region, such as Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri, and Onne, received development comparable to those in Lagos.

The Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, also paid tribute to Tukur, hailing him as a pillar of trade facilitation and an inspiration to the global trade community.
