Bamberg slaughterhouse preservation campaign submits 12,000 signatures

The Interest Group for the Preservation of the Bamberg Slaughterhouse (IG Schlachthof) has submitted approximately 12,000 signatures to Bamberg Mayor Andreas Starke to advocate for the continued operation of the municipal facility.

The coalition, which includes the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV), the Meat and Livestock Trade Association (VF-Bayern), the Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA), and local butchers, emphasizes the facility's economic and logistical importance. In the previous year, approximately 5,000 farmers delivered 42,200 cattle and 288,600 pigs to the slaughterhouse.

Proponents argue that maintaining the site is essential for preserving 160 jobs and supporting local butchers and direct marketing businesses that rely on short transport routes for animal slaughter and meat processing.
