Bambino Gesù Hospital removes bicycle brake lever from teenager's back

Specialists at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Palidoro successfully performed a complex surgical procedure to remove a 5.5-centimeter metal bicycle brake lever from a 13-year-old boy's back.

The object had been lodged near his spine for three years, having entered through a small wound in his left flank following a bicycle fall when he was 10 years old. For years, the teenager lived a normal life and continued to participate in sports without significant symptoms. However, at age 13, he began experiencing pain in his right leg and discomfort in both lower limbs.

While initial neurological exams showed no abnormalities, a spinal X-ray revealed the elongated, curved metallic object in the lumbar region. A CT scan showed the lever had migrated to the area between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae, positioned dangerously close to a nerve root. The body had partially encapsulated the object in a fibrous tissue sheath, which likely mitigated immediate complications. The three-hour surgery, led by the orthopedic team, successfully removed the fragment and stabilized the patient.
