Dominican Republic advances maritime drug trafficking protocols and intercepts cocaine

The Dominican Republic is advancing regional security efforts through two primary developments: the establishment of a new maritime drug trafficking protocol and significant narcotics interdictions.

During a meeting of the Inter-American Commission for Drug Abuse Control (CICAD-OEA) hosted at the 27 de Febrero Naval Base, experts from the Americas and Europe worked to develop a regional protocol. This initiative aims to strengthen the exchange of intelligence and information to coordinate responses against maritime drug trafficking.

In a separate operation, the National Directorate for Drug Control (DNCD), the Dominican Navy, and the Air Force intercepted a Go Fast boat off the coast of Baní. Authorities seized 389 packages of suspected cocaine, along with GPS devices and fuel supplies. Two Dominican nationals were detained during the 12-hour operation, which was supported by international agencies including the US Coast Guard and the DEA.

Additionally, local authorities are addressing domestic security and economic matters. The Director General of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, emphasized the need for quality standards to boost economic competitiveness, while migration officials are overseeing the training of new rapid reaction agents to ensure ethical conduct and legal compliance.
