Banabuiú security forces escort water distribution after criminal threats
Security forces in Ceará, Brazil, have been mobilized to ensure the distribution of mineral water in the municipality of Banabuiú following extortion attempts by a criminal faction. Local merchants suspended the sale of water jugs after receiving threats from individuals identifying themselves as members of the Comando Vermelho (CV), who demanded weekly fees to authorize commercial activities.
The shortage forced residents to form long queues at the Matriz Church Square to access water, and local educational institutions were temporarily forced to suspend activities due to the scarcity. To restore supply to the approximately 17,000 inhabitants, military police have been escorting employees from the Companhia de Água e Esgoto do Ceará (Cagece) as they transport and distribute water containers.
Authorities have already detained three suspects believed to be part of the local faction, seizing a revolver, ammunition, cash, and electronic devices. The Civil Police have identified a suspected mastermind behind the threats, who is reportedly located in Rio de Janeiro. Law enforcement agencies in Ceará are working alongside Rio de Janeiro police to locate and arrest the individual.
