Banana markets face recovery in Europe and price surges in Algeria

The global banana market is experiencing divergent trends. In Europe, the market is recovering from a difficult summer characterized by low demand for both organic and conventional varieties and high production levels that drove prices down. Mark Greeve of Anaco & Greeve notes that while prices are currently rising, they are rebounding from exceptionally low levels. Weather patterns, including excessive rain in Costa Rica and Colombia, are resulting in smaller fruit sizes, though the specific impact of El Niño remains difficult to predict.

In contrast, Algeria is facing a significant price crisis, with banana costs reaching record highs. Some retailers are charging up to 1,500 dinars per kilogram, nearly triple the previous average. This surge has prompted the Algerian Ministry of Internal Trade and Market Regulation to intensify inspections to investigate potential market manipulation and price disparities across the distribution chain. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has pledged to protect consumer purchasing power as authorities examine wholesale and retail practices.
