Banana nutrition: Experts clarify safety of ends and fibers

Experts have clarified common misconceptions regarding the edible parts of bananas, specifically addressing the black ends, white strings, and dark spots found within the fruit.

The black tip of a banana is a natural remnant from where the fruit was attached to the plant and is safe to consume. While myths suggest these spots could indicate spider activity, such instances are extremely rare; actual spider presence would typically be marked by a white, sticky, web-like substance.

Similarly, the white strings, known as phloem bundles, are essential for transporting nutrients during the fruit's development. Chemist and nutrition researcher Nicholas D. Gillitt noted that these fibers likely contain diverse types of dietary fiber. Removing them is a matter of personal preference rather than necessity, as they are safe to eat. Small dark spots inside the flesh are also harmless, often representing remnants of seeds.
