Banana preservation and usage guide to reduce food waste
To prevent food waste, bananas should be stored based on their stage of ripeness. Green or firm yellow bananas are best kept in a fruit bowl at room temperature in a cool, dry, and ventilated area to ripen naturally. Once a banana has reached its peak ripeness, it can be placed in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life by approximately one week. While refrigeration may cause the skin to turn dark, opaque, or grayish due to cold damage, the internal pulp often remains in good condition.
For bananas that are overripe or black, the freezer is an effective storage method for several months. Additionally, very ripe bananas can be repurposed in recipes, such as making banana pancakes. A traditional recipe involves mashing four ripe bananas and mixing them with eggs, milk, cinnamon, baking powder, vanilla, salt, and flour to create a sweet, zero-waste breakfast.
