Banana producers in Piura reinforce pest and disease controls

Banana producers in the Samán population center, located in the Marcavelica district of Sullana, Piura, have undergone technical training to improve the sanitary management of their crops. The initiative reached 52 farmers and focused on the early detection of pests and diseases to allow for faster decision-making and prevention.

The training, conducted by the Regional Government of Piura through the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and the PIP Banano, utilized a practical methodology known as the ‘Prueba de Caja’ (Box Test). This approach allowed farmers to observe physical samples and analyze characteristics of various phytosanitary issues in a field setting rather than through theory alone.

In addition to pest identification, the sessions covered biosecurity protocols and Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM). The program employed a Farmer Field School methodology, encouraging participatory learning and the exchange of experiences among local producers to strengthen their capacity to respond to agricultural threats.
