Bananas: Consumption trends and import logistics in Germany
Bananas are the second most popular fruit in Germany, with an average per capita consumption of approximately 11 to 12 kilograms per year. Because they cannot be grown locally, they are entirely imported, primarily from South and Central American countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.
To ensure freshness, bananas are harvested green and transported in refrigerated containers. During transit, they are often kept in moist conditions to accelerate ripening. Once they reach European markets, they are placed in ripening chambers using an ethylene-nitrogen mixture to control the process.
Consumers may occasionally notice moisture on the peels in supermarkets. This is often a physical result of condensation caused by temperature changes during cooling rather than a sign of spoilage. Nutritionally, bananas serve as an efficient energy source due to their carbohydrates and contain tryptophan, which the body converts into serotonin.
