Banana nutritional benefits and food safety guidelines

The nutritional profile and health benefits of bananas vary significantly depending on their stage of ripeness. Green bananas are high in resistant starch and prebiotic fibers, which pass through the small intestine to the large intestine to support gut microbiota and promote satiety. As bananas ripen, this starch converts into simple sugars, making the fruit sweeter, softer, and easier to digest, providing immediate energy ideal for pre- or post-exercise consumption.

Regarding food safety, experts recommend washing bananas before peeling them. Although the thick skin acts as a protective barrier, contaminants such as bacteria, dirt, and pesticide residues can accumulate on the surface during harvesting, packaging, and transport. Washing the fruit helps prevent cross-contamination, as microbes from the peel can be transferred to the edible flesh via fingers or knives. Additionally, rinsing bananas may help reduce the presence of fruit flies, which are attracted to the fruit and may lay eggs on the peel during storage or transit.
