Bancali Prison detainee intercepted with concealed material
Prison guards at the Sassari-Bancali correctional facility in Italy intercepted a detainee attempting to smuggle illicit material into the prison. The individual, who was returning from a permitted leave, was stopped after staff suspected he had concealed material in the form of ovules within his body.
The detainee was transported to the emergency room for medical examinations and to undergo procedures for the expulsion of the concealed items. Following the medical intervention, the individual was reported to the judicial authorities.
The Autonomous Union of Prison Police (SAPPE) praised the professionalism and vigilance of the officers involved. Donato Capece, the general secretary of SAPPE, noted that such interceptions prevent illegal materials from reaching the wider inmate population. However, he also used the incident to call for better resources, including adequate staffing and modern technological tools, to support prison security.
