Banco BPM and MPS face critical week amid merger talks
A decisive week is unfolding for the Italian banking sector as Banco BPM holds an extraordinary board meeting to discuss potential merger activities involving Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS). The board may authorize CEO Giuseppe Castagna to examine the operation in greater detail.
There is significant uncertainty regarding the stance of Credit Agricole. The French bank has previously expressed opposition to an aggregation between Banco BPM and MPS, favoring a combination of Banco BPM with its own Italian assets. Analysts suggest that Credit Agricole currently maintains effective control over Banco BPM and might prefer to avoid becoming a minority shareholder in a new group.
Simultaneously, Tuscan regional leaders, including Governor Eugenio Giani and Siena Mayor Nicoletta Fabio, are meeting with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. The delegation is urging the Italian government to utilize regulatory safeguards, such as ‘Golden Power’, to prevent the dismantling or fragmentation of MPS following takeover attempts by Intesa Sanpaolo.
