Banco Central de Chile introduces new $10 and $50 coins
The Central Bank of Chile has announced the introduction of new $10 and $50 coins designed to improve production efficiency and reduce costs. The new coins will utilize an international standard technology involving a steel core coated with other metals, which will make them magnetic and reduce the reliance on expensive materials like copper and nickel.
The $50 coin is expected to enter circulation in October 2026. While it will maintain its current diameter, its weight will decrease from 7 grams to 6.5 grams. The $10 coin is scheduled for release in January 2027; it will feature a reduced diameter of 18.7 mm (down from 21 mm), a weight of 3.46 grams, and a smooth edge to assist in tactile identification.
Both denominations will retain their current designs to ensure they remain easily recognizable. The Central Bank emphasized that the new coins will circulate alongside existing ones, and current $10 and $50 coins will remain valid and do not need to be exchanged.
