Banco de Portugal Governor advocates for international pension reform models

Álvaro Santos Pereira, Governor of the Banco de Portugal, has advocated for pension system reforms that look toward international best practices rather than ideological stances. Speaking in Bragança, he suggested that Portugal should examine how other nations complement public pension systems with additional savings mechanisms.

He cited examples from Sweden and Denmark in the 1990s, where reforms focused on reinforcing individual savings to ensure better retirement outcomes. Pereira also noted that Germany is currently debating similar social security reforms to increase pension complementarity.

The comments follow a report from a government working group on social security sustainability, which recommended the adoption of professional pension plans with automatic enrollment to help finance the challenges posed by increasing life expectancy.
