Argentina implements debt relief and restructuring measures

Various Argentine institutions are implementing measures to address rising household and business debt. The Banco de Tierra del Fuego (BTF) has launched a financial relief scheme featuring reduced interest rates for credit cards and personal loans, reporting high demand following an initial phase that mobilized over $13.8 billion.

In the province of Buenos Aires, the Defensoría del Pueblo has introduced a service to provide technical assistance and mediation for individuals seeking to refinance personal loans and credit card balances. This initiative aims to negotiate more sustainable payment plans, interest reductions, or debt write-offs with creditors.

At the municipal level, the Junín City Council approved an ordinance to create a protection and debt restructuring procedure managed by the Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC). This program offers free legal and administrative assistance, including credit evaluations and the promotion of conciliatory agreements.

In the corporate sector, financial tools such as factoring and B2B credit are being utilized by SMEs in Buenos Aires to manage liquidity amid shifting interest rates. Additionally, in Santa Fe, the provincial government and Banco Bica are promoting production-focused financing lines, including specialized credit for energy transition projects.
