Banco Hipotecario Nacional to close by end of 2027
Banco Hipotecario Nacional is scheduled to cease operations on December 31, 2027. During a legislative budget hearing, bank manager Alberto Ortega requested $10.5 million to cover operations through the end of 2027, including salaries for 167 employees and related service costs.
A legislative project is being developed to manage the entity's orderly closure. The strategy aims to eliminate the duplication of functions and reduce public sector operating costs. Under the proposed plan, the bank's credit portfolio and mortgage business will be transferred to the Caja de Ahorros, while the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot) will oversee social interest housing projects.
A transition committee will be established, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Miviot, the Caja de Ahorros, and the Comptroller General of the Republic to oversee the transfer of assets and the mortgage portfolio.
