Banco Master investigation expands to Argentina and legal maneuvers in Brazil
The investigation into Banco Master and its founder, Daniel Vorcaro, has expanded into international legal territory. In Argentina, a R$ 458.6 million loan granted by the bank to Revee Real Estate is being scrutinized as part of the ‘Sur Finanzas’ case. The loan was used by Revee to demonstrate financial capacity during a bidding process for the concession of the José María Minella Stadium in Mar del Plata. Argentine prosecutors are considering international cooperation with the Brazilian Federal Police to investigate potential links to money laundering and fraud involving the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
In Brazil, Vorcaro’s legal team has undergone changes, with attorney Daniel Bialski joining the defense. Bialski stated that Vorcaro ‘wants to talk and wants to collaborate,’ signaling a potential new attempt at a plea bargain after previous proposals were rejected by authorities. The defense has requested an audience with Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça to seek expanded visitation hours for lawyers and full access to investigation files.
Economists have commented on the systemic implications of the scandal. Former Central Bank President Armínio Fraga described the situation as a ‘grotesque failure’ in the application of existing regulations, suggesting that the case highlights necessary reforms for the Credit Guaranty Fund (FGC) and financial oversight models.
