Banco Nacional of Costa Rica launches $30 million social bond for mipymes and senior entrepreneurs

Banco Nacional of Costa Rica issued a new $30 million social bond aimed at expanding financing for micro, small and medium enterprises (mipymes), women entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs aged 50 and over. The bond complies with the International Capital Market Association’s Social Bond Principles, ensuring that the proceeds will be allocated to projects that generate employment and promote inclusive economic growth across the country. Silvia Chaves Herra, director of Brand Experience and Corporate Relations at the bank, said the instrument responds to Costa Rica’s demographic shift and seeks to turn the experience of older entrepreneurs into economic opportunity while supporting thousands of mipymes and women‑owned businesses.

The initiative marks the first time the bank has incorporated a dedicated component for senior entrepreneurs in a social‑bond issuance, targeting productive activities of people between 50 and 70 years old.
