Banco Popular Dominicano allocates 41% of loan portfolio to Dominican SMEs

Banco Popular Dominicano confirmed it has directed 40.8% of its commercial loan portfolio, amounting to RD$157.3 billion, to micro, small and medium enterprises (mipymes). The bank reported 59,600 such loans at the end of April 2026, a 4.1% year‑on‑year increase, with an interest rate of 11.7% and a delinquency rate of just 1.3%.

The institution highlighted the sector’s role in the national economy, noting that mipymes contribute about 32% of the Dominican Republic’s GDP, generate roughly 3.05 million jobs (61.6% of total employment) and represent 98.5% of all registered firms. Executive President Christopher Paniagua said the bank will continue supporting these businesses to foster a more dynamic, competitive and sustainable economy.
