Argentina proposes USD 3.5 billion for naval rearmament in 2027 budget

The Argentine government has submitted its 2027 Budget Project to the Chamber of Deputies, which includes a significant authorization for naval rearmament. The proposal allows the Executive Branch to negotiate up to USD 3.5 billion in public credit to strengthen the Argentine Navy's operational capabilities.

Specifically, the budget earmarks USD 2.3 billion for the acquisition of three conventional submarines to be stationed at the Mar del Plata Naval Base, and USD 1.2 billion for two multi-mission frigates for the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base. These acquisitions are part of a broader effort to restore naval capacity following the 2017 loss of the ARA San Juan.

The Ministry of Defense is currently in advanced discussions with international firms, including the French company Naval Group—which offers the Scorpène model—and the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. Additionally, the plan includes the allocation of funds for four light naval helicopters and continues the Argentine Military Reequipment Plan (Plan ARMA), which directs 10% of revenue from state asset sales toward military modernization.
