Banda Aceh research links food waste to rising greenhouse gases and tests orange peel for wastewater treatment

A study of the Free Nutritious Food Program (MBG) in Banda Aceh measured an average food‑waste generation of 154.38 kg per day, resulting in estimated emissions of 2.254 tonnes of CH₄ per year (about 63.1 tonnes CO₂‑eq). Expansion of the program to 44 sites could raise methane emissions to 33.23 tonnes annually. The authors recommend mitigation measures such as an integrated compost facility, menu adjustments, use of waste as animal feed, and community education on waste segregation.

Another thesis evaluated orange‑peel extract (Citrus × sinensis) as a natural biocoagulant for slaughterhouse wastewater in Banda Aceh. Laboratory jar tests showed the extract reduced total suspended solids by up to 99.2 % at a 0.2 % concentration with stable pH, but it was less effective at lowering chemical oxygen demand, achieving a best COD of 886 mg/L at 0.4 % concentration.
