Bandırma couriers protest after alleged assault at restaurant
Approximately 60 delivery couriers gathered in Cumhuriyet Square in Bandırma, Balıkesir, to protest an alleged assault on a colleague. The incident reportedly occurred at a doner restaurant on Şehit Süleymanbey Street following a dispute between the establishment and a courier named Fırat.
According to representatives, the courier sustained a head injury during the altercation and was treated at Bandırma Training and Research Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable. It was further alleged that during the conflict, the courier was grabbed by his arms and an attempt was made to pull him into a basement area. Another courier who attempted to intervene also reportedly sustained injuries.
During a press statement, spokesperson Sait Ocak used the incident to highlight broader systemic issues within the ‘esnaf kurye’ (tradesman courier) model, noting that many responsibilities are placed on the couriers. He also cited difficulties regarding motorcycle access to certain residential sites. The protesters called for a full investigation into the assault to ensure such incidents do not recur.
