HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk to be referred to prosecutors over IPO fraud allegations

South Korean police are set to refer HYBE Chairman Bang Si-hyuk to prosecutors this week, concluding a long-running investigation into allegations of fraudulent unfair trading.

The case centers on events from 2019, prior to HYBE's 2020 initial public offering (IPO). Investigators allege that Bang misled existing investors by claiming the company had no immediate plans for an IPO. This allegedly prompted investors to sell their shares to a special purpose vehicle (SPV) connected to a private equity fund associated with Bang.

Authorities estimate that Bang may have gained illicit profits ranging from approximately 190 billion to 260 billion won through these transactions. While police previously sought arrest warrants for Bang, the prosecution twice rejected those requests, citing the need for supplementary investigations. Bang has denied all allegations, maintaining that his actions were lawful and compliant with regulations at the time.
