Bangarra Dance Theatre Wins Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice Biennale Dance 2026

Bangarra Dance Theatre, an Australian company founded in Sydney in 1989 and composed of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, received the Golden Lion for career achievement at the 20th edition of the Venice Biennale Dance, held in Venice from 17 July to 1 August 2026. The award highlights the company's role in translating more than 65,000 years of Indigenous cultural heritage into contemporary dance.

The company presented its signature work “Terrain”, created in 2012 by artistic director Frances Rings, which draws on the landscape and spiritual significance of Kati Thanda‑Lake Eyre in central Australia. The performance uses movement, sound and lighting to embody the land itself rather than depict it, emphasizing collective choreography and the deep connection between body, territory and First Nations cultures.
