Bangkok Governor addresses fraudulent birth registration scheme

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has revealed that investigations into a fraudulent birth registration scheme, involving the use of false fatherhood information, have identified more than 40 related cases. These incidents primarily occurred between 2017 and 2020 and involve officials previously arrested for similar misconduct.

To prevent future corruption and address national security concerns regarding foreign nationals, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is implementing stricter verification processes. This includes reviewing marriage histories and ensuring that parents must appear in person to register births rather than delegating the task to hospitals or third parties.

Additionally, the BMA will implement a mandatory rotation policy for district office staff. Officials who have served in the same district for three to four years will be transferred to different locations to reduce local familiarity and minimize the risk of corruption and illicit networks.
