Bangkok flood recovery expected to improve as rainfall decreases

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reports that rainfall is expected to decrease over the next three days according to the Thai Meteorological Department, providing a window to accelerate water drainage. While major roads are expected to improve within two to three days, clearing flooded residential communities may take up to seven days due to the need for specialized pumping to remove water that crossed flood barriers.

The drainage situation in major canals like Khlong Saen Saep and Khlong Prem Prachakorn is improving, aiding areas such as Bang Kapi and Vibhavadi Rangsit. However, the Prawet Burirom Canal remains a critical challenge due to its winding path, requiring assistance from the Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Irrigation Department to push water toward the Phra Khanong drainage gates.

Authorities are also monitoring the capacity of Nong Bon Lake, which currently has 3 million cubic meters of remaining capacity. Long-term mitigation includes a government-approved water diversion tunnel project to connect Khlong Prawet to the lake. Regarding relief efforts, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is coordinating with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to assist an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 affected residents.
