BANGKOK MAERSK completes first Suez Canal transit
The container ship BANGKOK MAERSK completed its first transit through the Suez Canal on Saturday. Traveling from Italy to Singapore as part of the northern convoy, the vessel is operated by the Maersk shipping line.
The ship measures 350 meters in length and 56 meters in width, with a capacity of 190,000 tons and the ability to carry up to 17,200 TEU. Notably, the vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on green methanol to reduce carbon emissions. It currently operates within the AE7 service, connecting major ports in Asia with those in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, noted that two Maersk vessels transited the canal in the northern convoy that day, including the MATHILDE MAERSK, which has a 200,000-ton capacity. Captain Pata Radu stated that choosing the Suez Canal route over circumnavigating Africa saves approximately 14 days of travel time, providing significant time and cost advantages for customers.
