Bangkok transport updates: unified rail fares and expressway toll increases

Thailand's Ministry of Transport has announced two significant changes to Bangkok's transportation costs. Starting January 1, 2027, a unified single-ticket system will be implemented across all urban electric rail lines. This system will cap standardized fares between 17 and 45 baht, eliminating multiple entry fees during transfers. To support this, the government plans to provide an annual subsidy of approximately 5 billion baht to cover fare differences for longer journeys. Krungthai Bank has been selected to manage the central clearing house and back-office payment systems, with plans to eventually transition to EMV-enabled cards.

Separately, toll fees on the Prachim Ratthaya Expressway (Si Rat–Outer Ring) are scheduled to increase on December 15. Under the new rate structure, tolls for four-wheel vehicles will rise from 65 baht to 80 baht. For vehicles with 6 to 10 wheels, the fee will increase from 105 baht to 130 baht, while vehicles with more than 10 wheels will see an increase from 150 baht to 185 baht. The adjustment follows an approval by the Expressway Authority of Thailand board in accordance with existing concession agreements.
