Bangladesh and Germany discuss parliamentary diplomacy and foreign policy

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh held a bilateral meeting with a German parliamentary delegation to strengthen diplomatic ties. Discussions focused on parliamentary diplomacy, the Rohingya crisis, climate change, and electoral processes. The meeting highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation following Bangladesh’s recent democratic transition and expressed interest in establishing a ‘Bangladesh-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group’ to institutionalize ties between the National Parliament and the Bundestag.

During the session, the committee also addressed domestic foreign policy priorities, emphasizing a ‘Bangladesh First’ approach to ensure national interests are prioritized in international partnerships. The committee stated that the government is continuing necessary diplomatic and legal efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country.

Additionally, the committee reviewed measures to combat illegal migration and human trafficking. Recommendations included improving the verification of migrant workers' documents and coordinating with the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment to ensure transparent recruitment through authorized agencies. A new migration wing has been established within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protect the interests of expatriates.
