Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia expand defense and maritime security cooperation

Bangladesh is actively seeking to modernize its military and diversify international defense partnerships to reduce national vulnerabilities and ensure strategic autonomy. This effort includes exploring various global powers to avoid over-reliance on a single arms supplier, which is seen as essential for protecting the country's economic growth.

In a recent development, the Navy Chiefs of Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh met in Riyadh to discuss expanding bilateral naval military cooperation. Vice Admiral Mohammed Al-Ghuraibi and Admiral Khondkar Misbah-ul-Azim focused on joint efforts to address threats to maritime navigation and sea lane security. This cooperation is particularly relevant to the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition, of which Bangladesh is a founding member, aimed at protecting commercial vessels and energy tankers in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

Beyond maritime security, Bangladesh's defense strategy is influenced by regional challenges, including border security issues related to displaced persons and energy insecurity caused by a dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
