Bangladesh signals openness to joining Makkah Joint Defence Agreement
Bangladesh has expressed openness to joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral pact recently signed by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye. The agreement, signed on August 7, establishes a framework for collective deterrence, stipulating that an armed attack against any one signatory is considered an attack against all three.
Bangladeshi officials, including State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir and State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, emphasized that any decision to join the economic or defence framework would be guided by the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy and the protection of national interests. Kobir noted that the country is also working to strengthen bilateral ties with Pakistan through trade and people-to-people connectivity.
Additionally, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Riyadh following an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with the schedule likely to be finalized after the summer. Meanwhile, Syria has also indicated it is considering joining the defence grouping to enhance regional security cooperation.
