Bangladesh arrests two for trafficking citizens to fight in Russia-Ukraine war
Bangladeshi police have arrested two individuals, Mizanur Rahman and Abu Taher, for their alleged involvement in a trafficking network that deceived citizens into fighting for the Russian military in Ukraine. According to Mohammad Asaduzzaman, commander of the Special Response Battalion, the syndicate recruited at least 30 people using false promises of high-paying jobs.
Upon arrival in Russia, victims reportedly had their passports and phones confiscated before being handed over to the military. Reports indicate that 20 Bangladeshis have been confirmed dead in the conflict. One survivor noted that seventeen victims were killed on their first day of deployment following minimal training. Some victims were allegedly used as bait to identify enemy positions during drone attacks.
Victims, many from impoverished backgrounds, reportedly paid approximately $8,000 for these fraudulent employment opportunities. In response to the scandal, the Bangladeshi government has revoked the licenses and confiscated the security deposits of three recruiting agencies involved.
