Bangladesh Bank expands banking access for expatriates

Bangladesh Bank has introduced policy changes to the management of Non-Resident Convertible Taka Accounts (NRCTA) to expand banking facilities for expatriates. Under the new regulations, expatriates can now open these accounts at any Authorized Dealer (AD) bank, whereas previously they were limited to offshore banking units.

Expatriates have the flexibility to choose from savings, current, or fixed-term accounts. Funds can be deposited via banks, exchange houses, or money transfer operators from abroad, as well as through transfers from existing foreign currency accounts.

The new system allows account holders to use funds for domestic expenses, transfer money to other bank accounts, and invest in approved sectors within the country. Additionally, expatriates can secure loans by using the funds in these accounts as collateral. A key feature of the updated policy is that both the principal amount and any earned interest or profit can be safely transferred back abroad. To enhance accessibility, banks will provide online account opening and e-banking services, allowing expatriates to manage their finances from anywhere in the world.
