Bangladesh-China ties deepen after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's Beijing visit

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made a five‑day official visit to China from June 22‑26, 2026, meeting President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji. The trip, Rahman's first overseas trip since taking office, resulted in the elevation of bilateral relations and the signing of eight memoranda of understanding, three agreements, one protocol and a Joint Action Plan covering development, education, trade, agriculture and human‑resource cooperation.

Both sides agreed to institutionalise a strategic foreign‑minister‑level dialogue and launch a “2+2” foreign‑defence dialogue mechanism. Key infrastructure projects announced included the modernisation of Mongla Port, the creation of a Chinese economic and industrial zone in Chattogram, and accelerated studies on the Teesta River comprehensive management project. The agreements reinforce Bangladesh's participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and signal a deeper strategic partnership in the South Asian region.
