Bangladesh considers joining Mecca Joint Defence Agreement
Bangladesh is considering joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a collective deterrence pact signed on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye. The agreement stipulates that an armed attack on any one of the three signatory nations would be treated as an attack on all three.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir stated that the government sees no risk in joining the pact and believes it presents unique opportunities. He emphasized that membership would not restrict Bangladesh's ability to engage with other international partners or participate in different alliances.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman previously informed Parliament that Bangladesh would positively consider joining the defense framework if invited. Kobir noted that discussions with bilateral partners are progressing positively and that the country aims to maintain a flexible foreign policy within the current international political climate.
