Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan
Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement (MJDA), a mutual defense pact established on August 7, 2026. Based on the principle of collective defense similar to NATO, the agreement stipulates that an armed attack against one signatory is considered an attack against all members.
Bangladesh is currently considering joining the alliance. Government officials, including Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister Shama Obaed, have indicated that Dhaka is positively assessing the potential economic and security benefits of the pact. An invitation has reportedly been extended to the leadership of Bangladesh, specifically Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The potential entry of Bangladesh into the MJDA presents a significant diplomatic challenge, particularly regarding its relationship with India. Analysts suggest that aligning with a pact that includes Pakistan could strain ties with New Delhi, especially as Bangladesh navigates complex regional politics and seeks to maintain economic stability.
