Bangladesh court grants 7-day remand for man accused of threatening Prime Minister

A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day police remand for Abu Bakar Siddique, a student arrested for making a threatening comment on social media regarding Prime Minister Tareq Rahman’s visit to Rajshahi.

The arrest followed a post featuring a bus used by the Prime Minister, where Siddique allegedly commented, ‘It was a great opportunity, only a sniper was missing.’

Investigating officers from the Detective Branch (DB) Cyber and Special Crime unit requested the remand to uncover potential conspiracies to assassinate the Prime Minister. Authorities aim to determine if the comment was part of a larger plot involving organized terrorist groups, weapon suppliers, or a mastermind. The investigation will also seek to identify two to three other unidentified individuals mentioned in the case and check for connections to banned organizations.
