Bangladesh demands extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India
The Bangladeshi government has intensified its demand for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India, stating that her return is a prerequisite for improving bilateral relations.
Zahed Ur Rahman, the Information and Broadcasting Adviser, stated that the government is no longer seeking a voluntary return but intends to capture Hasina through legal procedures. He emphasized that once she returns to Bangladesh, she will face the death penalty previously handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity and will not be granted the opportunity to appeal the sentence.
The government also expressed frustration with the Indian government, requesting that it restrict Hasina’s media activities while she remains in the country as a fugitive. Hasina, who has been in India since August 2024 following a student-led uprising, has previously indicated an intention to return to Bangladesh in late 2026.
